more about holmes@law ...
A graduate of Stanford University and Emory School of Law, JoAnn Holmes ("Jo") is adept in distilling complex information into pragmatic, result-driven solutions for clients. Jo has practiced law for over 20 years, and her career began in the Technology & Intellectual Property ("IP") practice group of Troutman Sanders, a prominent Atlanta based law firm. There, she successfully represented a gamut of diverse clients, from startups to multi-billion dollar companies like Chick-fil-A, Microsoft and WalMart.
Moving in-house, Jo served on business management and legal teams in senior leadership roles for both public and private manufacturing companies. For more than a decade, she was the “go-to” lawyer for her business units with presence in North and South America, Europe, Africa, and the Asian Pacific Rim.
Jo has led corporate mergers, and conducted legal diligence for multi-million dollar target acquisitions. She is well accomplished in both negotiating sophisticated domestic and international commercial contracts, as well as resolving high dollar disputes cost effectively. Her practice has included support for marketing, sales, e-commerce, R&D, regulatory, HR, manufacturing, IT, procurement, finance and risk management teams.
Jo oversees sophisticated IP portfolios in 150 countries, and has managed assets exceeding $2 billion in annual revenue. Her practice spans trademark clearance and registration, packaging review, advertising and social media analysis for famous global brands. She has successfully negotiated licenses with international media companies such as Disney, Dream Works and Sony, and conducted product label clearance and advertising evaluations for major retailers including WalMart, Target, Home Depot and Lowes.
Jo teaches and speaks extensively on business law, intellectual property and technology. She has been an invited speaker for Fortune 50 audiences, the Association of Corporate Counsel, Georgia State Bar, Cornell and Penn State law schools, and the American Institute of Graphic Artists. She's served as an Adjunct Professor of Law, taught "IP 101" to corporate teams in customized seminars, and written on legal issues for the American Bar Association, as well as various Atlanta area publications.
Jo has a consistent history of service work for both local and international organizations. Since founding HOLMES@LAW, she has dedicated over 300 hours volunteering with local schools, leadership groups, and working toward poverty alleviation.
Jo is currently a member of the board of directors for the Stanford National Black Alumni Association. Moreover, she's a longstanding board member for New Harvest Family Day Care, which nurtures the children of low income families. Jo has served on the State Bar of Georgia's IP Outreach & Philanthropy committee, and on the steering committee for Leadership Gwinnett's GLANCE program.
In her local community, Jo works on the Advisory Board for The Path Project (supporting children's education in immigrant communities). Likewise, she proudly served as an inaugural Advisory Council member for the Entrepreneurship Program at Discovery High School. Jo has taught business and legal seminars for SCORE (a Small Business Administration partner) and the Gwinnett Chamber of Commerce.
Jo regularly volunteers with the Southeast Gwinnett Cooperative Ministry food pantry. Through her alumni association, she's partnered to package medical supplies for hospitals in crisis zones, and prepare school books for shipping to Africa. HOLMES@LAW financially supports Global Girls Alliance, CARE USA, and Heifer International, all respected charitable organizations dedicated to girls' education and poverty alleviation in the developing world.
